About the Summit

The Upstate Data Summit brought together municipal government officials from across Upstate New York to showcase innovative uses of data and technology. The event offered an opportunity for attendees to learn how Upstate governments are using data, and how governments new to open data and data-driven decision making can begin their own programs.

On June 6, 2018, the first Upstate Data Summit was held on the campus of Syracuse University, drawing more than 70 attendees from across the region.

The Upstate Data Summit has grown into a meaningful gathering for municipal leaders across New York who want to explore how data and technology can reshape local government. By bringing together officials, technologists, and civic innovators, the event creates space for candid conversations about what works, what stalls, and what might be possible when communities commit to evidence-based decision making. Participants leave with new ideas, broader networks, and renewed motivation to apply data tools in service of residents. The summit reflects a regional belief that smarter use of information can help cities and counties become more responsive, transparent, and equitable in how they plan for the future, regardless of size or budget.

At its core, the summit focuses on practical applications rather than abstract theory, highlighting real projects that have improved public services and strengthened community trust. Sessions often explore how open data portals, performance dashboards, and shared analytics platforms help governments track priorities, communicate progress, and engage citizens in new ways. Speakers from across the country share case studies showing how mid-sized cities have used data to address pressing issues like transportation, public safety, and equitable service delivery. The program is designed to be approachable for officials who may not yet have formal data programs but recognize the value of starting small, learning from peers, and building momentum over time through steady, incremental improvements.

Equally important is the summit's emphasis on collaboration and shared learning among Upstate communities that often face similar challenges. By convening representatives from cities, counties, universities, and nonprofit partners, the event encourages participants to compare notes, identify common opportunities, and develop strategies that can be adapted across different local contexts. The atmosphere is intentionally welcoming, recognizing that meaningful innovation in the public sector rarely happens in isolation. Through workshops, lightning talks, and informal exchanges, attendees discover how regional cooperation can accelerate progress and reduce duplication of effort. The summit ultimately serves as a catalyst, helping local governments in Upstate New York build the relationships and confidence needed to harness data for stronger communities.
